EMS 61 (First Responder) is a full-semester long course encompassing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training and Advanced First Aid skills required of all lifeguards, correctional officers, police officers and firefighters and other certified first responders in both the private and public sectors. Successful completion of the knowledge and skills tests qualifies students for a National Safety Certificate and a Professional Rescuer CPR card. EMS 61 is also a prerequisite for the formal EMT-Basic “Emergency Medical Technician” training class, EMS 81.

EMS 81 (EMT-1 Basic) is a full-semester long course designed to prepare students for national certification as an EMT-1. Students will learn a multitude of skills including patient assessment; care and treatment of respiratory emergencies using oxygen and basic airway adjuncts, and receive classroom lectures on hazardous materials, ambulance operations, patient transport, and mass casualty training and introduction to the role of EMS personnel within the Incident Command System (ICS). EMT-1 certification is the minimum requirement for entry into the job market for Basic Life Support Ambulance Attendants in the Private and Public sector and for entry level firefighter positions in many agencies throughout California. Upon successful completion of coursework, students will be eligible to sit for the licensing examination with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Additionally, students may proceed to the next phase of the certification process with the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services Agency.
