Paramedic Training Program
The Paramedic Training program at Las Positas College will be transitioning to a for-credit college course program. College credit will be offered and the course will satisfy the requirements for academic credit towards their associate’s degree in EMS or a Certificate of Achievement through Las Positas College. As a course approved by the State Chancellor’s Office, Financial Aid is available if the student qualifies. The costs of the program will be charged at $46.00 per unit and there will be a Materials and Lab Fee of approximately $888.00 for I.V. catheters, uniforms, Scrub Suit, Course Certification card and fees for National Registry Paramedic Licensing Testing, ACLS, PALS. /PEPP, PHTLS, and TECC. The final Materials and Fees cost will be formalized over the Summer Session and posted in the Fall 2016 Class Schedule. Ambulance Providers that maintain an educational affiliation agreement with Las Positas College to provide Field Internship training may also charge a fee ranging from $1,000.00 to $3, 000.00 that is the responsibility of the Student.
The estimated total cost of the program ranges from $3,682.00 to $5,682.00.
The Las Positas College Paramedic Training Program has been approved by the Alameda County EMS Agency until May 31, 2016. Letter of Approval. Application for Re-approval is in process. The Las Positas College Paramedic program holds a Letter of Review, which is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, but is a status granted by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). Las Positas College will receive an Accreditation Site Visit from the CoAEMSP during the month of May 2016.
Upon successful completion of the Las Positas College Paramedic Training Program, including the didactic, clinical, and field internship components, students will be eligible to sit for the licensing examination as a Paramedic with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
The Paramedic training program prepares individuals to become paramedics. The Paramedic program at Las Positas College is a full-time, 18 month, fee-based, special admissions program.
Classes will be announced in the Class Schedule for Fall of 2016.
The next cohort starts August 17, 2016. Admission is by special application only. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2016.
As a Special Admissions program, interested students and prospective applicants are required to have all the program pre-requisites completed at the time of application. In addition, due to requirements of the clinical training facilities, admitted students to the paramedic program must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug panel screening. Admitted students must also submit immunization records prior to course attendance showing verification of required vaccinations and or titers.
Selection Process:
Prospective applicants must attend one of three offered orientation sessions on:
- Tuesday, May 31 of 2016 at 6:00 pm in Room 2201
- Saturday, June 11 of 2016 at 12:00 noon in Room 2201
- Wednesday, July 6, of 2016 at 6pm in Room 2201.
At the orientation session, prospective applicants shall take a 100 question multiple choice examination based on final examination questions posed to emergency medical technician students. The score attained will be used as a ranking factor in the selection process.
Applicants are encouraged to enroll in an EMT Refresher class offered at Las Positas in the Spring of 2016. The Course number is EMS 91 CRN # 32906 and will begin on April 16, 2016 and ends on May 21, 2016. The refresher class will be held on Saturdays from 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
Applicants must also submit unofficial transcripts at the orientation session showing their GPA in EMS related courses, their overall college GPA, and a screen print of their priority registration group at Las Positas College.
Applicants must also be 18years of age at time of the first class date in August of 2016.
There will be finite number of points available and assigned to EMS coursework GPA and College GPA. Points will also be assigned based on the score achieved on the 100 question multiple choice examination. Based on the points accrued, each applicant will be ranked and 30 offers of placement will be tendered to the 30 highest scoring applicants. The last five scores will be offered conditional placement if any member of the initial class of 25 students cannot meet the requirements of an admitted student such as failure to obtain immunizations, background clearance, or drug screening.
The admission points allocated will be as follows:
EMS EXAM
100 points for the multiple choice examination covering EMT topics
EMS GPA
100 points for an EMS course related GPA of 4.0 in EMS 61 and EMS 81 at Las Positas College or Chabot College or equivalent.
80 points for an EMS course related GPA of 3.0 in EMS 61 and EMS 81 at Las Positas College or Chabot College or equivalent.
70 points for an EMS course related GPA or certification graded as Pass/No Pass from another community college, Post-Secondary Private Institution if a grade was not assigned. (Certification in the State of California as an EMT is a requirement of the program and the certification card itself is insufficient to use as points. Applicants must show a course completion certificate or transcript from their EMT training institution with a catalog or instructor statement that the course was taught PASS/NO PASS.)
OVERALL COLLEGE GPA
- 100 points for an overall college GPA of 4.0
- 80 points for an overall college GPA of 3.0
- 70 points for an overall college GPA of 2.0
- 30 points for an overall college GPA of 1.0
Points based on College GPA and EMS Course related GPA will be calculated proportionally
Course Pre-requisites:
- BIO 50 Anatomy and Physiology
- EMS 62 Medical Terminology
- California State EMS Authority EMT Certification
(NREMT registration as an EMT is insufficient to satisfy this pre-requisite. Prospective applicants to the Paramedic Program seeking admittance to the Las Positas College Paramedic Program must seek CA State EMS Authority certification as an EMT in the State of California.)
Las Positas College Priority Group shall be assessed as follows:
- 100 points for the first Registration Group
- 95 points for the second Registration Group
- 90 points for the third Registration Group
- 85 points for the fourth Registration Group
- And 5 point increments for the fifth and subsequent Registration Groups.
The college will not require work experience nor hold interviews with any prospective applicant in order to maintain the selection process as merit based and objective in nature.
